The UNIVAC I Trailblazer in Computing and Accurate Predictor of Presidential Elections

UNIVAC I was developed by J. Presper Eckert and John Mauchly, the same individuals who were involved in the development of ENIAC.

The first unit was delivered to the United States Census Bureau in 1951. UNIVAC I had a processing speed of about 1,000 instructions per second, making it significantly faster than its predecessors.

It gained public attention when it accurately predicted the outcome of the 1952 U.S. presidential election on live television, becoming one of the first computers to do so. The success of UNIVAC I led to the development of subsequent models, such as UNIVAC II and UNIVAC III, which continued to improve upon the capabilities of the original design.
